Counted down The Billboard Top 50 Soul Singles from this week in 1972. Had to skip a few but managed to feature over 30 records including the full length version of our closing theme "Walk In The Night" by Jr. Walker & The All Stars. Background jams were from the Eddy Senay album "Hot Thang" whose title track was featured on the show and is one of my personal favorites, one I haven't heard in a dog's age, having only recently acquired the album.

Friday February 19 Playlist + Update + Joel Tyner

As Pete's show went on, a couple thoughts occurred to me. No doubt the Orphan Master selected some great 45s, he definitely did. And his professional radio announcer delivery--makes me green with envy. He's simply one of the best at what he does. Love that guy.

But as I approach my 6th anniversary with WVKR later this month, I can honestly say I'm still jazzed and excited about the music that I play. 6 years later, I'm still finding tunes to play that I've never played before--in an Oldies format, no less.

And it's more than liking a bunch of cool songs and throwing them together, it's about putting them in a context historically, and pacing them in terms of variety i.e. fast, slow, hit, non-hit, soul, rock, ballad, etc. I take time each and every week to plan this stuff out in advance because I am so passionate about the music and the era that it represents. And I want it sound good to you, the listeners, as well. The goal is to mix the tunes with the clips with the trivia so that it paints an audio picture and helps you remember where YOU were at the time or what it MAY have sounded like if you weren't.

I don't always succeed; sometimes what I think will sound good on air ultimately does not. Also, I get feedback like Too Much Soul/Rockers/Ballads and yet an equal number of Too LITTLE Soul/Rockers/Ballads comments come in. So I learned long ago, ya can't please every-one, so ya got ta please yourself.

You'll notice the format changes almost weekly--some weeks it's 4 songs then talk, others 8, sometimes talk over the songs, some times not, etc. I've tinkered with the formula so often trying to get it just right. Because it matters. The music is that important. To me at least. If I could talk over a song as well as Peter Clark, it would be a done deal!

But I'm rarely satisfied.

I am proud of what I done on WVKR thus far. I've been fortunate to have had the job flexibility that allowed me to take Friday afternoons off to come in and hopefully entertain you for 2 hours. But when I got the word a few months ago that my Saturday shift was to be no more, it was a wake up call. I had to do something else.

A door was closing. What now?

I've been thinking a long time about putting together a coffee table book about 45s. A chronological listing of every single to make the charts (plus more): "45 RPM: 1964-1970 From " Want To Hold Your Hand" to "The Long And Winding Road" ". But how to finance such an undertaking?

An Email from someone affilated with WVKR--someone I like and respect--who was displeased about something I'd written on this Blog earlier this Fall coincided with the tepid response I got during our pledge drive which coincided with a meeting I attended in my village of Cold Spring where a group of us were contemplating starting our own online newspaper. I mentioned I was a DJ at WVKR and someone halfheartedly said, "Hey, Sam, you should start your own radio station." I scoffed at the time, until I looked into it. And you know what? I saw that it was not impossible.

Getting FCC licenses, a transmitter, engineer, frequency etc to start a low power station like the one coming in the Catskills--overwhelming, but an internet radio station? Doable!

Also, serendipitous was an article in the New York Times about Montana Radio Cafe. There ARE no such things as coincidences, kids. That article, my doubts about my worth at WVKR, my new job situation, they all conspired to make me go for my dream.

Thus Cold Spring Radio is born.

And I am absolutely petrified about this new endeavor.

There is every likelilhood that it will fall flat on its face, that there is no way something like this could ever take off. Some guy sitting in a storefront window on a tourist-craving Main Street doing a live radio show, hoping to attract passersby? Hoping to get people to listen on a regular basis to music they can't often hear on other radio stations? Hoping that the station's visibility will be good for the town that I live so that yet another "For Rent" sign doesn't have to go up? Hoping that local advertisers and listeners will financially sponsor this to help keep it running????

The odds are against. Strongly.

But this was that window opening while that door was closing. Now or never. Crunch time. Open the storefront, earn some extra income, put together the book in the meantime. Whew! A dream, and now it's happening.

I'll continue to host "The Lost And Found Oldies Show" Fridays at 3 for as long as I can, but it's only a matter of weeks before I'll have to give up my time slot and believe me when I tell you how much I'm gonna miss it. Hopefully, they'll let me sub-it's a great place, really, with a lot of great people who really care, with SO much potential to be better than it is--SO MUCH--, and just the thought of not seeing Primitive George for at least a few minutes every week is not easy to face. I'm serious. For all the ribbing I do of him on air, he is tops at what he does. And he'll hate me for saying this, but he's a heckuva nice guy!

And YOU, the people who take the time to call or Email. If it wasn't for you I would be just another guy playing records in his basement. Alone. When you Email, especially, (cuz you can't know how hard it is to really pay attention on the phone and not subject listeners to dead air), it really, really keeps me going when I've wanted to save on gas money and not show up or take a freelance assignment and call for a sub. So THANK ! YOU!

As for Joel Tyner....I HATE when he shuts down the turntable right in the middle of Patti Smith's "People Have The Power"! HATE IT! It shows such a disrespect for the music and anyone listening who might actually like the song. aaargh!

Finally, I hope you'll join me Friday February 26 for February 1970 AM Radio Hits And Misses. I don't "randomly pick a year out of a hat"; it's 40 years ago this week, has been now at least once a month since 2006. Hello?

I may not have the velvety tones of the incredible Peter Clark, but hopefully you sense my passion for the music I play. I am not embarassed in the least for putting it on. Thanks for listening.

Ok , ya gots yer DJs who throw on a buncha "oldies" and call it a "show" and then you have something like today's program. I am not sorry to see Scott Shannon's Truuue Olllldies channel bite the dust on 95.7 up here to be replaced by Christian radio, but unfortunately that syndicated mess will probably rear its ugly head somewhere soon.

Today's "Lost And Found Oldies Show" brought you more than just music--audio clips from TV, movies, radio commercials of Feb. 12, 1964 all to commemorate the Beatles playing Carnegie Hall 45 years ago today following their first appearance on Ed Sullivan 3 days later.

Eatabone an I offered to fill in for Joel Tyner while he's on hiatus due to the election--can't have a radio show and run for office--but my Email was never responded to, and found out 2nd hand that Exec Staff might air a repeat of Democracy Now, which is what happened. (Just wish someone would have let me know for sure)....Got some calls re: this issue. One was opposed to the Dem Now repeat, one was just as rabidly FOR, one caller thought that Fridays could be devoted to just music. Where do YOU stand?

Also, Tony O is no longer on WVKR--not sure if that's temporary or permanent--what's YOUR take on the situation? Gonna miss him?

Two albums debuted on the Billboard Album Chart 40 years ago this week: "Everything's Archie" and the Soundtrack to"Easy Rider." Sp0tlighted both of those LPs today; was taking votes from the callers and the majority of you preferred "ER" but not by much. And some of you agreed with me that BOTH are equally deserving of merit. So true!

The WVKR Pledge Drive starts Tuesday, September 8th. Hopefully you can donate some $$$ to the station to keep it running for another year. I'm hoping to get a minimum of 40 people to call in their support. NO DONATION IS TOO SMALL!

Pete was absolutely wonderful and as much as I love The Bachelor Pad, I'm not so sure I would have been able to dismiss the treasure that is Pete Seeger so quickly.

Today we commemorated 30 years ago July 12, 1979 and Steve Dahl's Disco Demolition Night in Chicago's Comiskey Park. The unofficial death of Disco?

I expected a lot of friction, not to mention down right complaints for playing ~gasp~ DISCO on the show today. Most were appreciative of the mix, except one guy who said, nope, guess 1979 was not a good year for music. WRONG! Most people took a side 30 years ago, either Rock OR Disco, couldn't like both. You have a chance to win a $50 gift card simply by identifying the A-side of the single as well as the artist of each record. Oops. looks like I shoulda made it clearer about what I meant by "Beach Music". From WIKIpedia:

Beach music, also known as Carolina beach music, is a regional genre which developed from various musical styles of the forties, fifties and sixties. These styles ranged from big band swing instrumentals to the more raucous sounds of blues/jump blues, jazz, doo-wop, boogie, rhythm and blues, reggae, rockabilly and old-time rock and roll. Beach music is closely associated with the style of swing dance known as the shag, or the Carolina shag, which is also the official state dance of both North Carolina and South Carolina. Recordings with a 4/4 "blues shuffle" rhythmic structure and moderate-to-fast tempo are the most popular music for the shag, and the vast majority of the music in this genre fits that description.

Lotta good tunes, but I think last year's Memorial Day Beach Music special worked better because I mixed up the categories above whereas today I sorta lumped 'em all together. Oh well. All vinyl show today except for a few requested tunes I only had on CD. Why? To protest the new CD players the station got. You've probably heard every DJ rag about 'em like I did on this blog page last week. Not sure what this will mean for my future shows that utilize a lot of jingles.

OK, so WVKR spent all this $$$ on new CD players that are supposed to be top of the line but are NOT the best equipment for a radio station, especially on a show that plays 2 minute songs! The players are tempermental about CD-Rs, often take anywhere from 3 to 15 seconds to "load", an eternity if you're trying to be fast paced, and have a slight delay between the time you push the button and when the sound comes out.

One nice caller said he didn't notice any problems; I think he was just being kind. And like I said on the air, who could be upset with the groovy sounds coming out of the ray-dee-oh! Thanks SO MUCH for listening!

In its place was a recording of the same song sung by ex-spouses Lulu and the Maurice Gibb recorded in 2002. Hope you enjoyed.

Let me explain the rationale behind today's "Lost And Found Seventies Show". I originally had a traditional show planned, a mixture of pop, rock, bubblegum, country and soul rarities spanning the decade. But something happened on my 45 minute midday commute home Thursday that had me chuckin' the playlist and starting over.

We finally got our Spring Break Thursday here in the Hudson Valley--temps in the 60s, sun shining and just wanted to rock and rhythm out with the windows rolled down 70s style. I starting flipping through the radio dial in an effort to find some consistent good ol rock n roll or R&B to follow me home but the scan just kept up its repetitive regret leaving me frustrated and angry.

CBS-FM, Q104.3, PDH, KISS FM would occasionally throw me a musical bone, but for the most part managed to disappoint big time. I never knew there was so much Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones on commercial radio! In less than an hour while surfing the dial, I heard records by each of these acts no less than two times on various stations in our area!

So today's show was pretty much the kind of music that reflected the type of sounds I'd like to hear blastin' through my speakers the way they did in various Aprils in the 70s. Heard from lots of great listeners, a lot tuning in from their cars as well as backyards, kitchen and of course, good ol' work. How'd it sound to YOU?

Next week it's a double dose of Sammy--3:00 has "Lost And Found Sixties" and then from 6 to 7 I'll fill in for Jonny in "The Bachelor Pad At Colony Three". Very Randy!

I read a PSA at the beginning and end of the show that I wrote myself. I cannot beLIEVE the amount of trash and litter I'm seeing on the roads this Spring. I took a tall kitchen bag and walked down my street and filled the thing within 10 minutes. What compels someone to throw garbage out a car window? And notice it's mostly fast food, cigarette, or alcohol-related trash. sigh....

I guess people who don't respect their bodies don't respect their planet, either. Shameful.

Got some great ideas for dog seperation anxiety including stay the night at the dog's new digs, bring a picture, bring his blanket, take an article of clothing, his favorite toys, etc. and a great suggestion--DON'T WORRY! IT'S A VACATION, HE'LL SURVIVE, GO HAVE A GOOD TIME!

Some people asked about Art Garfunkel at the Paramount in Peekskill last week. It started off HORRIBLY with a pathetic version of "El Condor Pasa" where Art walked off the stage, then returned and after the song implored someone to "close the doors; it's too distracting."

He got better as the show went on, but there were some missteps, "Sound of Silence" and "Mrs. Robinson" being major ones. Highlights for me were "For Emily", "Kathy's Song", and a smokin' "Cecelia". Also a cut from Art's underrappreciated 2003 album "Everything Waits To Be Noticed" was exquisite, as was a cover of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes". Didn't love "I Remember You" and another standard from his most recent standards album; "All I Know" was awright, but NO "I Only Have Eyes For You"??? Shocking! "Bridge Over Troubled Water" brought unexpected misty eyes for me cuz I never liked the song as a kid, but he sang it GREAT, opting not to sing the high notes. In fact, many of his songs could've benefitted from some backing vocals which were sparse at best.

I thought he LOOKED good for --gasp, i just looked it up--67! But Alice in the front row said he looked old. 67???? He has a 3 year old son, he said. oy. A caller said today, be thankful our musical faves are still around. But shouldn't they know when it's time to retire? All in all, I'm glad I went; when he shone, he shone brightly, just not often enough.

So there's a NEW radio station in town, town being New York City. It's actually the OLD 92.3, which bombed with its hybrid of current/classic rock. Once the station lost Howard Stern, it was just a matter of time. Opie & Anthony, who'd been KROCK's biggest names since Stern's departure, were also let ago as the station changed formats to....wait for it...CURRENT POP!!

Yes, kids, as if Z100, K104, KTU 103.5 weren't enough, now we have yet ANOTHER venue to listen to Kanye, Britney, The Pussycat Dolls, etc etc. Honestly, would it be so hard to program say, an OLDIES station that didn't SUCK and still do well in the ratings, i.e. earn enough in advertisting dollars to stay afloat? CBS-FM does well in the ratings, so I'm not knocking them because they're putting out what sells to the idiot sheep who listen. I shudder to think who actually tunes in for any length of time that isn't forced to listen in delis, shopping malls, offices with its inoffensive mix, destroying our beloved music in the process with their inane repetition and uninspired segues.

But there IS a void in the New York/Hudson Valley area which is spelled O.L.D.I.E.S. and also Energetic Rock like the music featured on The Primitive Show or Little Steven's Underground Garage. I'm utterly convinced that a station that focused on a mix like these two shows, sans the Chili Peppers, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin et al would score big time.

Ahh, but what do I know? I grew up thinking The Monkees were better than The Beatles....

It was AM Radio Gold from 40 Years Ago This Week on "The Lost And Found Oldies Show" as we counted down the Top 100 of March 6, 1969 according to Cash Box Magazine. I managed to fit in 42--count 'em FORTY TWO records from that golden era. Ignited a lot of memories. Things are rough out there for a lot of us, and it's comforting to hear all these fine songs from a time when things SEEMED a little more innocent.

Feb. 20 Playlist + 3 Girls And NO Buddy!

After the show, I hightailed it to NYC for the Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Buddy Miller show at the refurbished Beacon Theatre. My seat was Row DD Left, that's 4th row, kids. NICE! Even nicer is that there were 4 EMPTY seats in front of me and right next to me--for a SOLD OUT SHOW! Bonded with the woman on my left, a big fan as well, and she told me that there was a sign posted that Miller had taken ill and would not be performing. CRAP!

Oh well, the 3 girls appeared, looking lovely. HOW can Emmylou be SIXTY?? Gorgeous! They started off seated with a rendition of "To Know Him Is To Love Him" that would make one almost forget the version from "Trio". Then they alternated solos with one or both occasionally providing backing vox.

Highlights in a fantastic set featuring their own compositions as well as works by Dylan, Tom Waits, Lennon/McCartney and more included Emmylou's version of Joni Mitchell's "The Magadalene Diaries", Shawn Colvin's own "Trouble" from "A Few Small Repairs" and a NEW song from Patty called "He's A Dud" which got one of the night's biggest responses for its catchy hook and humorous lyrics.

All were in fine form vocally --Shawn Colvin has a richness to her voice that isn't always showcased on record, Patty Griffin has mastered the art of strength vs. vulnerability and Harris live loses that weathered edge that has marred her latest recorded works., Their between-song banter was witty, folksy and Shawn is particularly hysterical.

I only wish there were more GROUP vocals. They excelled on The Beatles' "I'll Be Back" and an encore presentation of "The Baby" from "O Brother", so why not MORE? Also with a back catalog as vast as Emmylou's, I expected at least ONE number from her pre-2000 solo works, but nada. And Patty announced her next project would be a gospel effort. Darn.

But the 2 hour+ show was an event I'm glad I witnessed. The trio covered Miller's absence well, though I can only imagine how strong the concert would have been WITH Buddy. Perhaps those attending the show in Kingston will find out.

The Miracle On The Hudson inspired me to chuck the planned playlist and just go for what makes me happy--AM Radio Gold from my favorite year for pop music--1966. I'm a bigAmerican Idol fan (even though I've never bought a tune from any contestant-- ever. Oh wait, I downloaded Kat McPhee's "Over It"--loved that one.) But I've already forgotten all of the Tuesday night contestants (except for Bikini Girl) so let's move on to Wednesday that I just watched on DVR last night.

I think we've seen the next American Idol and it is NOT guy who sadly lost his wife recently. (Why does the cynic in me think he might be faking that for sympathy votes? What does that say about ME to even THINK such a thing????....) He was good, but not even in my Top 5, though the Grapevine tells me he'll be a contender.

#5. Jennifer Two Last Names--kinda chubby with glasses who will shine with a little help from the AI Stylists. Appealing, don't you think?

#4. India Sister of Asia, (daughter of Europe and Antartica?)--Spunky and perky and possibly quickly annoying in a Ramiele kinda way.

#3. #2 #1 it's a TIE ! it's a TIE.! ALL of these contestants wowed the pants off of me (which was not a good thing since it was so cold last night) I rewound the digital tape to watch them all again because I was so impressed. In order of appearance....

Kasey Carlson aka KC shouldn't have dressed like one of the attendants at Cinderella's Fairy Castle--(the Dollywood version judging by the cowgirl boots) but I haven't been knocked out by a girl that much since I caught the McPheever a couple years ago. Did you see how appropriate she acted when she was put through? SHE didn't have to "knuckle punch" the judges like the widower did. And what a voice!

Michael Castro--I know I know, I should DESPISE this guy, he's "only been singing for 20 days" "If 'J' can do it..." but come ON, I couldn't take my eyes off him despite the pink mohawk. (Better Mo than Dread?) The guy was VERY appealing and I hope he makes it through!

Lil Rounds-- Hands down better than Lil Kim, and way better than Lil Bow Bow and even Lil Orphan Annie. Kara's comment: "a combo of Fantasia and Mary J Blige"--not an altogether bad comparison. I expect good things. Umm,,,can we pep up the husband a little bit? He didn't look all that happy. Perhaps he senses several months of diaper changing and meal prepping ahead....

And I am already sold on new judge Kara! I hope she sends Bikini Girl packing SO fast! THOSE are the types of contestants the judges need to be blunt with, not the ones who have obvious....issues..

Like....Red and Blue hair Jazzmine--a train wreck to be sure, who probably watched the show from the Kansas City equivalent of Bellevue and poor poor Michael Nicewater!!! The thing about the mother?????? OMG! (Can a 50 year old man say "OMG"?) I SO wanted him to be good; knew he wouldn't be. Sorry, the producers should NOT have let that air.

All in All, I was NOT disappointed in Season 8's first week. Also, I discovered the way to watch IS to DVR......1 hour and 23 minutes. That's WITH rewinds. Amazing.

Jan 2 Playlist + An Amazing Factoid Or Two

Happy New Year, you wonderful listeners. Your loyalty and enthusiasm keeps me coming back week after week with what I always hope are innovative ways to listen to the music of our past.

Commencing Memorial Day 2006, I started taking a weekly look back at the hits (and more often than not: misses) of 40 years ago.

In 1967, there were 322 singles that reached their peak position on the Billboard Top 40 charts that year. I played 286 of those in 2007 or all but 36.

In 2008, I did even better. Out of the 277 records to make the Top 40, I played 269 or all but 8! Wow!

In addition, over the year (including today's show), I played another 230 singles that reached the Billboard TOP ONE HUNDRED for a total of 499 songs from 1968! I think that's quite an achievement. Most Oldies shows, even on satellite, would shy away from Tiny Tim, Pigmeat Markham, Claudine Longet, The Archies (unless it's "Sugar Sugar") but The Lost And Found Oldies Show brought you all these artists and so many more. Songs you never thought you'd hear again and some that could comfortably wait another 40 years to resurface.

And let's not forget the great LP cuts, R & B records and regional songs played from the great '68 over the past year. Where else can you hear such variety????

Actually, I was planning to play 500 Billboard Hot 100 Hits from 1968. The plan was to play the last Number One song of 1968 and then "miraculously" find another '68 single in my bag making it the magic 500. But I brought the wrong CD by the #1 song's performer which meant I really DID play only 499 Billboard hits from 1968 this past year. Darn!

If you're wondering what Top 40 records from 1968 I did NOT play, here they are:

#39 B B King--Paying The Cost To Be Boss ( I should have borrowed a copy from Nick or Doug!)
#39 Bull & The Matadors--The Funky Judge ( But I played THREE versions of "Here Come The Judge"!)
#39 Roger Miller--Little Green Apples (But I played O C Smith's more successful version!)
#36 Billy Vera & Judy Clay--Country Girl City Man ( I have this 45 but it was too scratchy to play on the air)
#35 Etta James--Security (Great tune, wish I had it!)
#33 Andy Williams--Battle Hymn Of The Republic ( umm...not sure I'd play it even if I had it.)
#31 James Brown--Goodbye My Love (Oddly enough not on JB's 4 disc set "Soul Time.")
#31 Peaches & Herb--Two Little Kids (Not big on P & H's 60s output anyway. They're an act who improved with age ala "Reunited" and "Shake Your Groove Thing" in 1979.

Pretty impressive huh? I'm considering making the "Forty Years Ago" segment a once-monthly thing, probably coinciding with Primitive George's always awesome GarageARockARamaPaLooza the first Friday of the month. I'm ready to shake things up a bit.

The Beatles White Album: 40 Years Later

On Friday 12/26's rescheduled WVKR Gala show, we're asking listeners to design the perfect SINGLE disc version of "The Beatles" aka "The White Album". What would you keep? What would you discard if you absolutely HAD to make it one LP instead of two--or approx. 15 tracks instead of 30?

Not as easy as it might first appear. Most people agree there's some dead weight on the recording. Filler, some might say. Pretention? Failed experimentation? Yeah, probably. Many of the tracks were evocative of what was to become the members' solo output in the 70s and beyond--which most will again agree is a mixed bag at best.

Yet there's another side that views "The Beatles" as the group's masterpiece. It certainly is one of--if not THE biggest--seller of their career.

But the challenge is to make "The White Album" a single disc--one that you would want to listen to from beginning to end with no horrors in between, which has been my reaction. I decided to make Side 1 a listenable pop album, choosing Track 8 as a warmup for a more headphone-oriented, psychedelic mind blowing Side 2. Track 5 says "this is where we've been, that part is over. Get ready for something completely different."

I was pretty sure going in which cuts I did not want on a single disc White Album, but others weren't so hard to leave off. Coming close to making the list were "Mother Nature's Son", "Happiness Is A Warm Gun", and Ringo's only contribution "Don't Pass Me By" but such is the lot of a record executive.

Here's my choices below in the order I'd program them on the album:

WVKR was off the air all day Friday due to an ice storm in the area, but right after The Lost And Found Oldies Show began, transmission resumed! It's a Christmas miracle!

Friday December 19th will be a special LAFOS. It will be 40 years since "The Beatles" (White Album) debuted on the Billboard Album chart. To mark the occasion, I'll play cuts from the LP speculate about whether or not the album is a masterpiece or grossly overrated.

Other VKR djs will be along for the ride and we'll take YOUR calls as well. If YOU were the head of Apple Records and could ONLY release a single album, what tracks from "The White Album" would you keep? What would you discard? And WHY? Should be a lively discussion.

Of course, knowing Georgie, Vince, Eatabone, et al, I doubt we'll stay on topic for the full 2 hours. Tune in and see how they rip Yours Truly to SHREDS!

You know what's really cool? Looking at the above playlist, I'm noticing that a full 2/3 of the records I played I've NEVER PLAYED BEFORE. Ever. I know I'm only on once a week for 2 hours, but I've been on for almost 5 years and I still haven't run out of material for ya. There ARE enough cool records that could be spun without getting stale even though they're "Oldies".

Not that the only FM Oldies station within listening range would ever do that--heck they're currently ALL Christmas ALL the time right now! That started BEFORE Thanksgiving. When there's a COMPETING station in the city doing the SAME THING! How annoying is THAT??

Who ARE these people that want to hear ALL Christmas ALL the time this early in the season? Don't they have CD players? Ipods? Oy. Wait, a colleague of mine at work just told me how she's LOVING waking up to Lite FM and hearing Christmas. It "fills her with glee". HEY I'M NOT ANTI CHRISTMAS SONGS BUT PLEASE WAIT AT LEAST UNTIL DECEMBER!

The problem, as I see it, is that the radio station programmers are programming for the remaining few that listen to radio. Most people gave up the medium long ago. Programming for sheep, if you will. To which I say BAAA!

Want an alternative? Give Brother Kevin his own radio program! Let he and Primitive George (with yours truly as permanent guest host) do a Funky Soul Show! Let Vince Vincent continue to bring in live musical acts like Uncle Monk!

Just got word that our Annual VKR Holiday Bash will be Friday December 19. Thanks, Lyn! Staff DJs are welcome to stop by between 12 and 5 for festive cheer and join ME on the air to dish on MY show. One listener called to say he was making note of the date. I hope it was so that he would remember to tune IN and not OUT.

Umm....news flash. ....the name of the program is "The Lost And Found Oldies Show" . It's not "The Primitive Show Part Two".

I certainly don't mind and even welcome comments about the records I play, even if you don't like the songs. But to add a comment like "If you weren't on after George, I'd probably change the channel"......well..... You know what? Next time, don't waste your time or mine and do just that. Change the channel or put on a friggin' Ipod. The phones were ringing off the hook and I'm expected to listen to your whining? Please!

On another front, Tony O's "Dungeon Serenade" premiered last night on an alternating basis with "Jukebox Jamboree". Wow, this guy is gonna be a fantastic addition to the Friday lineup! His passion for the music was both passionate and inspirational (to me at least.) I'm not even a big Doo Wop fan but Tony O kept me listening! HVW's loss is VKR's gain.

November 14 Playlist with SAM THE TATTOO MAN!

Sounded a tad different today, did it not? Courtesy of avid VKR listener Sam The Tattoo Man who so generously pledged the minimum amount of $250 (PLUS!) in order to get a guest spot on the show of his choice. I'm honored that he chose my show, unless of course, he figured I sucked so badly that he'd finally get to hear something GOOD for a change between 3 and 5! Hmmm...

Sam got a firsthand look at how crazy it gets, cuing up the records, filling out the online log, dealing with PSAs, handling the phones, all the while trying to figure out something relatively interesting to say once it's time to speak.

I'd like to put in my recommendation that based on what I heard today (Sam also guested on Primitive George's show), that station brass give him his own regular show pronto!

Speaking of Primitive George, he took the new photo of me that appears on the profile page as well as the one of the two Sams above. Thanks, Georgie, there's really no one else like you.

The scariest thing about my Halloween show was all the Easy Listening I played at the end according to one disgruntled listener.

Just for my mom and sister who were visiting! ummm....they made me turn off Peter Clark on the way home from the airport. And when I got home from the show they had ~~gasp~~92.1 Lite on the radio. They did NOT like The Bachelor Pad. Double Ouch! What are they drinkin' in Michigan???

Swear I heard "Thriller" 3 times in various stores yesterday. Wow, isn't commercial radio COOL?!!?

What was cool was the brief portion of The Primitive Spookarama I heard on Georgie's show. LOVE the movie bites. But um.....mom and sis don't dig El Primitivo either. Sigh....

And that was serious about a Verizon truck plowing into Millman's TShirt store in Poughkeepsie! Check out the Journal online for all the details. Glad no one was hurt.

Got an Email saying "Splendid from beginning to end". Wow thanks!

So I made it to the FMU Record Fair last night. Traffic was light, so was in the place before 8pm. Would 2 hours be enough time? The answer....NO WAY! Seemed like there were more dealers than ever before. Found my fave 45 sellers, ended up buying almost as many singles! By that time, it was 9:40, dealers were already packing up.

The good AND bad of the Fair was that there were SO MANY dealers! Things were SO cramped. Boxes were stuffed, hard to sort through. Some just stacked on top of others; virtually impossible to access. And the crowds...insane. I'm sure Sat and Sun will be worse. But if you have the time and the patience...go for it! Vinyl junkies, you'll LOVE it!

I absolutely love bantering with Primitive George! He brings out the ....freak in me. Anybody else wanna see us get a dual show?

Got word since Wednesday that Barrett was subbing for Doug Price Friday night. Then I found out it wasn't Barrett after all????? WHAT GIVES???

Jonny and Vince are hit and miss lately. So...

From now on, I aint promotin' nobody's show unless they call me and let me know they're doin' it. Too much misinfo and I don't wanna be the one spreadin' the lies.

Happy Birthday, Cliff Richard, who turned 68 this past week! The phone response was off the hook to the opening 60s segment featuring selections from "Me And My Shadows" which hit the UK charts this week in 1960! Shades of "Mad Men" (which has found its groove again over the past few weeks and has its season finale October 26). You watch? You love?

Should I play MORE early 60s music? I thought you guys weren't big on that. Now I'm not so sure....Tell me, Tell me!

At any rate, next week is ALL 1968, with a salute to "Laugh-In", the TIME magazine cover story 40 years ago this week.

I got THE greatest phone call yesterday. Someone who's been listening for quite a while, but never called. LOVES the CKLW (Drake's) jingles. The show MAKES his Friday, he said. Buddy, you made MY Friday with that call!

My FAVORITE phone calls are the phones where you guys tell me how a certain song reminds you of something, or are reacting to a tune you've never heard before. Though I'd LOVE to chat about music and other subjects, I just don't have the friggin' time. I hope I never come across as rude. But these songs are often short and I try to stay 2 tunes ahead in case the CD or record skips. Plus we now have to update the log LIVE online which is an added pain.

I got an Email recently from someone who turns the show OFF when 80s Drive Home comes on. He/she feels that a show with "OLDIES" in the title shouldn't play anything after 1976. Hmmm...maybe the term's a misnomer, but I loves me my 70s 80s stuff as long as it's rare and melodic! What do YOU think?

Someone else wants to know why I play so many BEE GEES songs....ummm...Cuz they're great? Not ALL of them, countered the wily Emailer. Especially anything post-"Lonely Days", their "last great song". Ooh, that's harsh. The Brothers Gibb put out many, MANY fine tracks after "Main Course" and well into the 90s. I think where they stumble is letting Barry take the lead on a lot of songs. His falsetto *can* be grating when not reined in. "ESP" that I played yesterday is an example Great tune for the most part until those HIGHER AND HIGHERS, both lyrically and sonically Ouch. But when the Gibbs harmonize and the melodies are strong, there are really few groups that can compare. Alice from Middletown....care to weigh in here?

OK, so Friday's show....a little different. The result of taking the morning off, surrounded by dismal drizzle and the taste of the week's economic and political news fresh in my mouth. Had a really upbeat, poppy peppy 60s show all lined up for the opening segment, but umm....come crunch time, just wasn't feelin' it.

So I did what I usually do when I'm feeling a little down--I went through my record collection. The LPs this time, not the 45s. And there were all these great rock albums from the 60s (yes, I'm so anal I have them ABC'd by decade). In particular, I found these great discs from 1968 that I don't usually play on my show and I felt like they just NEEDED to be heard on a day like Friday! So out with the original playlist and in with the new. The response was positive, but then there's no way to tell if you listened, got turned off, and turned the radio off. If you did, I'd love to know that too!

Speaking of Primitive George, he played a couple cuts from "The Beatles" (aka The White Album, as you all know). Geez, did that bring back memories! And not pleasant ones. "Sexy Sadie." "Everybody's Trying To Hide Except Me And My Monkey." And I made a comment on the air about how that album is one of the most overrated pieces of crap ever commited to vinyl. One of you called to support that theorum; another took me to task.

So I went back and looked at the track listing. Hmm...WAS I being hasty? A good half of the album is classic! USSR, Prudence, Guitar Weeps, Blackbird, I Will, Helter Skelter, Birthday (before it got ruined by DJs using it to announce celebrity birthdays and such) and of course Revolution, the good one . (i mean "Number 9" is interesting once. That's it.)

But Piggies? Ob La Di? Bungalow Bill? Warm Gun? Rocky Raccoon? WHY DONT WE DO IT IN THE ROAD???? Yuk. Call it innovative, progressive, full of hidden meaning, I call it bloated and pretentious.

Plus I associate the abysmal "Hey Jude" with "The Beatles" because they were out at the same time. Good song, just goes on too long. Right? (SPOILER ALERT: Warning, I WILL talk over the nah nah nah nahhhs when it's time to play it in a few weeks!)

A lot of the other songs I don't recognize by the titles, so maybe they're not so bad either. "The White Album" is one of the most controversial albums of all time in terms of love it or hate it. Where do YOU stand? Am I totally off here? I say let's just make it a SINGLE album (which we can do thanks to 2008 technology as opposed to 1968) and leave it at that. I am absolutely blown away by the support listeners of "The Lost And Found Oldies Show" have shown in this year's WVKR annual Pledge Drive! You don't know how good it felt to hear those phones ringing, and to have both phones going at once, well, I am humbly in awe that you think so highly of the show to take the time to call.

You generous people recognize the value in public community supported radio not restricted by focus groups and corporate sponsored research. For that I heartily thank you!

I do not have an official dollar amount pledged during 3 to 5 Friday, but suffice to say it was more than last year and in a time when finances are as tight for folks as they've ever been!

I'll never be an "All Hits" show, don't worry, but the popular records mixed in made those oddities made the overall show stronger, I thought. What about you?

And what about this Pledge Drive WVKR is having? Did you check out the website www.wvkr.org and get a load of that Tshirt Logo? What IS that? A rather PC colleague of mine was reminded of "cuts of meat" LOL.

I really hope WVKR does well this year. Other public/community radio stations have way more than one pledge drive per year.

And look at the diversity you get from this lil' ol' station eminating outta Poughkeepsie New York.... Folk! Lounge! Rockabilly! Blues! Garage! New Age! 80s Power Pop! Classic Country! POLKAS fer cryin out loud!

Wotta disappointment there was no Johnny Tremendous today! But life happens. Threw the show together in record time. "Summer" songs for the end of summer for the 60s and 70s sets. I normally *hate* theme shows. (ahem, Mr. Fornatale....) Hope this one wasn't too painful?

Where did the Summer of 2008 go??? The house was mostly in a state of turmoil, so there were less "Thursday Night Bashes" than usual, but still enough to empty more than a few bottles of tequila! Maybe we'll have a few more before the pool closing October 1st. You're invited! Call for details....

Phones were a little quiet today. Maybe it being the start of Labor Day weekend had something to do with it. But I must make note that I got THREE calls asking about Wilmer & The Dukes' cover of "Living In The USA"! Wow!

The Mama Cass song touched one of you deeply as well....Glad you liked it.

Someone actually didn't think the Tiny Tim record was that bad! They must listen to the Bachelor Pad at Colony 3! BTW, good show, Eatabone, last night! I love it when you break in frequently for shorter perios of duration. And you only have an hour--you shouldn't start at 6:03 and end at 6:57!

And I got a little flak for talking over the Dells' "Stay In My Corner". Hey, it was the 6 minute version with him vamping at the end, but since I was praising the vocal, the caller said I should have let us listen. Point taken. Speaking of soul, I did not love Vince's R&B set. Just being honest. But let's face it, where else you gonna hear that kind of stuff?

And I was chatting with a few callers who absolutely loved Thursday night's "Orphanage" Peter Clark rules. Bummer we won't hear him for the next two weeks. That guy almost always evades the Pledge Drive.

What a fantastic Friday for radio luvvers! Primitive George was at the top of his game. The opening set was a bit long....but the diversity of his music after that (except for Beck :-) was SUPERB!

Also great to hang out with Vince Vincent for awhile. He needs to retire now, because he'll NEVER top what he did last night. His show was THAT good. Other DJs try to mix in 70s punk & 60s classics with varying degrees of success but Vince nailed it! Kept me listening from start to finish. Devo's "Mongoloid" following The Honeycombs' "Have I The Right" should not have worked but it did. Brilliantly!

And can I just vent here? There is absolutely NO reason why ANY dj on WVKR should play The Police' "Every Breath You Take" unless it has SOME kind of context, either thematically or historically. One can hear that on ANY radio station at almost ANY time. For a VKR jock to play that is utterly Ridiculous!

I'm off next Friday August 1 but Lyn the She Devil will fill in. See you August 8th!

There was no "Real Majority Project" at 5pm because of a scheduled fire alarm which would have been a distraction for a talk show.

Jonny Eatabone and I took your calls re: WVKR on the whole. NO one wanted to talk on the air, but boy did I hear a lot from you guys! Here's the gist:

Love the whole Friday line up from beginning to end, but the talk shows interrupt the flow.

Love The Bachelor Pad but ENOUGH with the Austin Powers!

Why can't WVKR get their act together re: the tech problems? No sound out of right channel, distorted mics, bad internet stream!

BEST station on the air. Don't need block programming. Love the variety.

I hate when there's no DJ at the station! Who programs this???

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss Concert Review 6/10/08

Warning to anyone buying "Box Seats" at The Theater at Madison Square Garden:

It's another way of saying "Balcony". Yes, I was very high. In more ways than one, which shall be explained at the end...

Box Seats mean you will have to endure staring at a huge speaker resembling something out of the "Transformers" movie that will additionally obscure the portion of the stage that isn't already blocked by the fact that you're so far left. And did the woman two boxes in front of me HAVE to lean over the edge blocking my view? Her husband didn't like the fact that I asked her to stay still. Too bad.

Once I adjusted to these visual annoyances--compounded by the multitude of cameraphone flashes going off contstantly--I was able to settle in for a superb performance by two drastically different artists (I don't use that term loosely) who, on paper, should never have worked, but indeed, they do, in part thanks to producer T-Bone Burnett, who was also on stage and got to do 2 solo numbers of his own.

They covered 11 out of 13 tracks from "Raising Sand", and like that excellent CD, took turns duetting and then soloing and then duetting again. The third number was a cover of "Black Dog" arranged like the lead off track "Rich Woman" and it was clear this would be a night of sonic bliss! They did another Led Zeppelin track later that I didn't recognize, but the crowd certainly did.

I was surprised at how STRONG Krauss' voice could be; she naturally did not disappoint on the quieter numbers. No rock belting from her, though, and always on pitch. A joke about New Jersey drew boos, however.....

Plant seemed a bit subdued at times but his voice still had most of its Zep sheen, though there was not a lot of wailing in the show; nor should there have been. This was a show about SINGING and HARMONIES and the two delivered perfectly!

Sitting next to me was a 25 year old avid concert goer; upcoming shows for him included Tom Petty, Neil Diamond, and other "geezer" acts. What a nice young man! He even asked if I minded if he smoked. HUH? And then the theater filled with the aroma of marijuana. I politely declined his request to join him in a toke, but the contact high went nice with the high of the music by two excellent singers.

Started the show on a downer with the RFK piece, but I couldn't very well look back 40 years ago today without mentioning the tragic loss our nation and the world suffered. The Monkees Oh boy, I mentioned this was not only my least favorite Monkees tune, but one of my least favorite songs period! If Sam The Tattoo Man could take only one Monkees track on a desert, THIS is the one he'd pick??? Many calls continued pro and con. One guy remembered the flip side which I'm playing next week and LOVE! But let's face it, DW Washburn was just a silly piece of fluff, more annoying than funny. Well, I thought Joel Tyner wasn't going to show again, but turns out he was just running a little late. Had Sarah the new Program Director on the air for a few minutes. She announced a new show coming on WVKR soon with a mix of salsa, R & B and (oh no....) Hip Hop. Doesn't the station have enough Hip Hop? What do YOU think?

I implored Sarah to update the website to include at the very least correct contact information for the exec staff. It's just a two-person show for the summer, I understand that. But still our listeners are our most important part and we must give them their voice! For example, the station knew it would be down for 8 hours last Saturday. How frustrating that must have been for people tuning in and hearing nothing. I'm sure some people went to www.wvkr.org looking for answers ; woulda been nice if there was an explanation. Oh well, at least the sound was better this week. Mostly.

We went with a full 2 hour 1968 look back to remember Dick Martin, who passed away earlier this week. Martin was one of the co-hosts of "Laugh In" and the response to the many clips played from that classic series was quite positive.

Only Half positive was the response to Tiny Tim's "Tip Toe Through The Tulips With Me". Hey, every few years or so, it's required listening!

And many of you didn't know Harvey Korman died! Not to mention Earle Hagen who wrote and whistled "The Andy Griffith Show" theme. Talented men will be missed.

Memorial Day Marathon--What IS Beach Music, Sammy?

Wow, good times, good times...

Friday May 23 was an AWESOME experience for me. Counted down the Top 91.3 Beach Music songs of all time. Yes, there WAS a "point-3" song: "Dancin, Shaggin On The Boulevard" by Alabama.

Went from 3 to 9 pm with just a one hour break from 5 to 6 for the debut of WVKR's new talk show, but ....um....the host didn't show up. The guest did, though! Luckily Noah was there to fill in with some INCREDIBLE 60s garage/psychedelic music. It was his last day at the station; we'll miss him.

Got a few calls wondering how a "Beach Music" show could NOT feature any Beach Boys or Dick Dale tunes! Good question. Here's the answer:

Beach Music is extremely popular in the Carolinas, as far north as Virginia and as far south as northern Florida. It has nothing to do with surf music or the Beach Boys or California. It is mainly R&B music with a beat that is good for doing a dance called "The Shag."

Once again, you listeners came through with your calls. Put several of you on the air which was a LOT of fun. A great way to celebrate my FOURTH anniversary in the time slot following The KING of Friday Afternoons--Primitive George.
