Sparky survived 4 nights alone while I was on Vay Cay; by all reports even had a good time mingling with the other dogs. That's my boy!

St. Martin--beautiful! U.S. tourists--horrid!

Do ya really need to be wasted by noon? Do ya really have to bring your boom box to the hotel pool?

And why is it that the people you'd most rather not see naked are the biggest patronizers of the nude beach which was just down aways from our hotel? Yeesh.

March 27 Playlist + Art Garfunkel Concert Review

Got some great ideas for dog seperation anxiety including stay the night at the dog's new digs, bring a picture, bring his blanket, take an article of clothing, his favorite toys, etc. and a great suggestion--DON'T WORRY! IT'S A VACATION, HE'LL SURVIVE, GO HAVE A GOOD TIME!

Some people asked about Art Garfunkel at the Paramount in Peekskill last week. It started off HORRIBLY with a pathetic version of "El Condor Pasa" where Art walked off the stage, then returned and after the song implored someone to "close the doors; it's too distracting."

He got better as the show went on, but there were some missteps, "Sound of Silence" and "Mrs. Robinson" being major ones. Highlights for me were "For Emily", "Kathy's Song", and a smokin' "Cecelia". Also a cut from Art's underrappreciated 2003 album "Everything Waits To Be Noticed" was exquisite, as was a cover of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes". Didn't love "I Remember You" and another standard from his most recent standards album; "All I Know" was awright, but NO "I Only Have Eyes For You"??? Shocking! "Bridge Over Troubled Water" brought unexpected misty eyes for me cuz I never liked the song as a kid, but he sang it GREAT, opting not to sing the high notes. In fact, many of his songs could've benefitted from some backing vocals which were sparse at best.

I thought he LOOKED good for --gasp, i just looked it up--67! But Alice in the front row said he looked old. 67???? He has a 3 year old son, he said. oy. A caller said today, be thankful our musical faves are still around. But shouldn't they know when it's time to retire? All in all, I'm glad I went; when he shone, he shone brightly, just not often enough.

What a pleasure to have Alice from Middletown on the show LIVE in the studio. I think she really had a good time; I know she enjoyed meeting Primitive George, Frank, and all the callers who were so welcoming to this former cheerleader. I really enjoyed hearing your stories about the NY radio days before I moved out East.

Lotta good music from the 70s as we went back year by year. Lotta junk too, which I also played, hoping to jog your memories as to where YOU were and what YOU were doing way back when.

So there's a NEW radio station in town, town being New York City. It's actually the OLD 92.3, which bombed with its hybrid of current/classic rock. Once the station lost Howard Stern, it was just a matter of time. Opie & Anthony, who'd been KROCK's biggest names since Stern's departure, were also let ago as the station changed formats to....wait for it...CURRENT POP!!

Yes, kids, as if Z100, K104, KTU 103.5 weren't enough, now we have yet ANOTHER venue to listen to Kanye, Britney, The Pussycat Dolls, etc etc. Honestly, would it be so hard to program say, an OLDIES station that didn't SUCK and still do well in the ratings, i.e. earn enough in advertisting dollars to stay afloat? CBS-FM does well in the ratings, so I'm not knocking them because they're putting out what sells to the idiot sheep who listen. I shudder to think who actually tunes in for any length of time that isn't forced to listen in delis, shopping malls, offices with its inoffensive mix, destroying our beloved music in the process with their inane repetition and uninspired segues.

But there IS a void in the New York/Hudson Valley area which is spelled O.L.D.I.E.S. and also Energetic Rock like the music featured on The Primitive Show or Little Steven's Underground Garage. I'm utterly convinced that a station that focused on a mix like these two shows, sans the Chili Peppers, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin et al would score big time.

Ahh, but what do I know? I grew up thinking The Monkees were better than The Beatles....

March 6, 1969 Playlist + Podcast News!

It was AM Radio Gold from 40 Years Ago This Week on "The Lost And Found Oldies Show" as we counted down the Top 100 of March 6, 1969 according to Cash Box Magazine. I managed to fit in 42--count 'em FORTY TWO records from that golden era. Ignited a lot of memories. Things are rough out there for a lot of us, and it's comforting to hear all these fine songs from a time when things SEEMED a little more innocent.

As for posting an archive on the show, it's a little cost-and-time prohibitive at this point, so I'm shelving those plans for now.

But in OTHER podcast news, faithful listener Chuck from New Paltz has a WONDERFUL podcast that in two outings has managed to impress the bejeezus out of me. I is very picky about my radio, as you know, and if I didn't LOVE it, I'd just say nothing. Feb. 20 Playlist + 3 Girls And NO Buddy!

OK, I'm gettin' the sense you're LOVIN' the 60s, not so much the 70s or 80s. Am I right?

After the show, I hightailed it to NYC for the Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Buddy Miller show at the refurbished Beacon Theatre. My seat was Row DD Left, that's 4th row, kids. NICE! Even nicer is that there were 4 EMPTY seats in front of me and right next to me--for a SOLD OUT SHOW! Bonded with the woman on my left, a big fan as well, and she told me that there was a sign posted that Miller had taken ill and would not be performing. CRAP!

Oh well, the 3 girls appeared, looking lovely. HOW can Emmylou be SIXTY?? Gorgeous! They started off seated with a rendition of "To Know Him Is To Love Him" that would make one almost forget the version from "Trio". Then they alternated solos with one or both occasionally providing backing vox.

Highlights in a fantastic set featuring their own compositions as well as works by Dylan, Tom Waits, Lennon/McCartney and more included Emmylou's version of Joni Mitchell's "The Magadalene Diaries", Shawn Colvin's own "Trouble" from "A Few Small Repairs" and a NEW song from Patty called "He's A Dud" which got one of the night's biggest responses for its catchy hook and humorous lyrics.

All were in fine form vocally --Shawn Colvin has a richness to her voice that isn't always showcased on record, Patty Griffin has mastered the art of strength vs. vulnerability and Harris live loses that weathered edge that has marred her latest recorded works., Their between-song banter was witty, folksy and Shawn is particularly hysterical.

I only wish there were more GROUP vocals. They excelled on The Beatles' "I'll Be Back" and an encore presentation of "The Baby" from "O Brother", so why not MORE? Also with a back catalog as vast as Emmylou's, I expected at least ONE number from her pre-2000 solo works, but nada. And Patty announced her next project would be a gospel effort. Darn.

But the 2 hour+ show was an event I'm glad I witnessed. The trio covered Miller's absence well, though I can only imagine how strong the concert would have been WITH Buddy. Perhaps those attending the show in Kingston will find out.
