Oops. looks like I shoulda made it clearer about what I meant by "Beach Music". From WIKIpedia:
Beach music, also known as Carolina beach music, is a regional genre which developed from various musical styles of the forties, fifties and sixties. These styles ranged from big band swing instrumentals to the more raucous sounds of blues/jump blues, jazz, doo-wop, boogie, rhythm and blues, reggae, rockabilly and old-time rock and roll. Beach music is closely associated with the style of swing dance known as the shag, or the Carolina shag, which is also the official state dance of both North Carolina and South Carolina. Recordings with a 4/4 "blues shuffle" rhythmic structure and moderate-to-fast tempo are the most popular music for the shag, and the vast majority of the music in this genre fits that description.
Lotta good tunes, but I think last year's Memorial Day Beach Music special worked better because I mixed up the categories above whereas today I sorta lumped 'em all together. Oh well. It was still great to have Sam The Tattoo Man sit in with me. A heckuva nice guy. And he brought me a new copy of the original "Everything's Archie" LP! Totally forgot to mention it was 5 Memorial Days ago that I got the Friday 3pm gig following the amazing Primitive Show. A dream come true!
Remember Primitive George starts "The Primitive Soul Show" Wednesdays 8 to 10 pm all this summer. I hope to join him on occasion, maybe even THIS Thursday May 27 since I will NOT be doing a show May 29. I'll be in Detroit Rock City for my niece's high school graduation.

All vinyl show today except for a few requested tunes I only had on CD. Why? To protest the new CD players the station got. You've probably heard every DJ rag about 'em like I did on this blog page last week. Not sure what this will mean for my future shows that utilize a lot of jingles.
As for the phones, I was just pooped from a very stressful week. I love my life, but sometimes things just get overwhelming. You know how it goes. Anyway, bottom line, just didn't have the energy and certainly didn't want to have to be nice to anyone complaining the show wasn't rockin' enough! The songs matched my mood; I sure hope you liked 'em too. Let me know at the Email link above.

May 8 Playlist + Next 3 Weeks + WVKRRRRRRGH

Got some exciting 1969 news coming up in a few weeks. But let's get through May first. Next week it's Lost And Found Seventies. Not sure what form it will take--AM pop? Later FM rock? What would YOU like? Then May 22 is Memorial Day weekend. Sam The Tattoo Man wanted to guest host but I didn't hear from him this week so I think I'm going to go ahead with another Beach Music special like we did last 4th of July and very well received. The following week May 29 I'll be away. waa.
OK, so WVKR spent all this $$$ on new CD players that are supposed to be top of the line but are NOT the best equipment for a radio station, especially on a show that plays 2 minute songs! The players are tempermental about CD-Rs, often take anywhere from 3 to 15 seconds to "load", an eternity if you're trying to be fast paced, and have a slight delay between the time you push the button and when the sound comes out.
One nice caller said he didn't notice any problems; I think he was just being kind. And like I said on the air, who could be upset with the groovy sounds coming out of the ray-dee-oh! Thanks SO MUCH for listening!

First Of May, 1969
Wow what a trip through the Time Tunnel takin' us back to May First, 1969! Jingles, commercials, and even actual recordings of a CKLW jock from back in the day. Not to mention over 3 dozen 45s on the charts 40 years ago this week. Thanks for indulging my AM radio DJ passion; the phone lines were burnin' up, as they say, and I couldn't even answer every call. But seeing that the amazing Peter Clark chose THAT for his second song on his "Orphanage Of Rock And Roll" show Thursday night, I had to make other plans. In its place was a recording of the same song sung by ex-spouses Lulu and the Maurice Gibb recorded in 2002. Hope you enjoyed.

April 17 Playlist + Subbing For Bachelor Pad

Let me explain the rationale behind today's "Lost And Found Seventies Show". I originally had a traditional show planned, a mixture of pop, rock, bubblegum, country and soul rarities spanning the decade. But something happened on my 45 minute midday commute home Thursday that had me chuckin' the playlist and starting over.
We finally got our Spring Break Thursday here in the Hudson Valley--temps in the 60s, sun shining and just wanted to rock and rhythm out with the windows rolled down 70s style. I starting flipping through the radio dial in an effort to find some consistent good ol rock n roll or R&B to follow me home but the scan just kept up its repetitive regret leaving me frustrated and angry.
CBS-FM, Q104.3, PDH, KISS FM would occasionally throw me a musical bone, but for the most part managed to disappoint big time. I never knew there was so much Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones on commercial radio! In less than an hour while surfing the dial, I heard records by each of these acts no less than two times on various stations in our area!
So today's show was pretty much the kind of music that reflected the type of sounds I'd like to hear blastin' through my speakers the way they did in various Aprils in the 70s. Heard from lots of great listeners, a lot tuning in from their cars as well as backyards, kitchen and of course, good ol' work. How'd it sound to YOU?
Next week it's a double dose of Sammy--3:00 has "Lost And Found Sixties" and then from 6 to 7 I'll fill in for Jonny in "The Bachelor Pad At Colony Three". Very Randy!

I read a PSA at the beginning and end of the show that I wrote myself. I cannot beLIEVE the amount of trash and litter I'm seeing on the roads this Spring. I took a tall kitchen bag and walked down my street and filled the thing within 10 minutes. What compels someone to throw garbage out a car window? And notice it's mostly fast food, cigarette, or alcohol-related trash. sigh....
I guess people who don't respect their bodies don't respect their planet, either. Shameful.
And it'll be a doggone shame if you miss rockabilly band The Greyhounds playing LIVE at The Brass Rail on Route 9 at the Holiday Inn Saturday April 18 beginning at 10pm. I'll be there for sure and I'm gonna try to corral as many VKR DJs to join me. You be there. Email me for more info.
